A Faithful Warrior

Second Lieutenant Marc Levitt (shown in foreground of picture sharing a devotional with his friend Jameson Lopez) has been sharing copies of the Experiencing God Day-by-Day devotional book since mid-May. He received the books from the National Day Of Prayer Task Force through his home church, Westside Baptist Church, of Gainesville, Fla. Levitt, age 23, is a native of Plantation, Florida, and is a graduate of UF’s Army ROTC program.

Levitt was active for about a year in the church’s FAITH evangelism outreach, under the mentorship of senior pastor Gary Crawford and other staff and lay leaders. “Christ implanted in Marc a passion for seeing others experience the same love that he did, in his relationship with Christ,” Crawford says. “Not only was Marc a personal witness himself, but he encouraged and trained others. He made a real contribution to the evangelism ministry at Westside, and has been a personal encouragement to me as his pastor. Now at Ft. Knox, Kentucky for Armor Corps training, Levitt still takes a personal approach to evangelizing amidst his daily routine of PT, classroom time, and hands-on training. He and his 76 classmates will deploy in the next six to 12 months to Iraq or Afghanistan. He takes advantage of conversation starters such as offering a free copy of the camo devotional during ‘down time’ or on the weekends.

Deployment creates uneasiness, as people are away from their families for long periods of time,” says Levitt. “As warfare become more dangerous, especially in Iraq and now even more so in Afghanistan, you realize you can’t always control your destiny. Both of these things create a vacuum that God should fill, to keep families strong and soldiers brave.”

A message from David Barton

Cheryl and I were present at a remarkable military meeting attended by high-ranking generals and enlisted men, military cadets and highly-decorated veterans, and even families of those who have given life and limb to preserve freedom for the rest of us. They were all joined together for one purpose: to raise funds for a ministry that provides spiritual support for soldiers (especially those currently deployed or returning) and their families.

One particular area of ministry focus is the 20% of soldiers suffering from PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Col. Ollie North (the featured speaker) pointed out that a soldier deployed throughout World War II averaged fighting the enemy face-to-face for 6 months; by the Korean War, a deployed soldier averaged facing the enemy for 11 months during his time of service; it had jumped to 13 months by the Vietnam War; but in the War on Terror, a soldier with 6 years of service averages directly facing the enemy for 45 months!

Imagine the tension and stress caused during those lengthy deployments in which every car you walk past is a potential bomb waiting to explode, and every window you see hides a potential sniper. The intensity of being alert for your life 24/7 – of trying to see an enemy laying in wait before he kills you – is understandably nerve wracking. The result is a high percentage of warriors returning with PTSD – something that directly affects not only the solider but also their families.

The meeting was sponsored by Military Ministry – an organization that does remarkable service, assisting chaplains and commanders with caring for the spiritual well-being of troops and their families. Their goals include:

  • To evangelize and disciple U. S. military members throughout their military careers.
  • To stop the unraveling of the military family and provide Christ-centered solutions for those suffering from the destructive effects of combat trauma and especially PTSD.
  • To arm troops in harm's way with spiritual resources, and provide Bibles and devotional materials to chaplains and directly to troops. (As part of this latter objective, they have distributed some 2 million "Rapid Response Kits" to soldiers – packages that include Bibles, devotionals, and other spiritual tools.)

This is an excellent group, worthy of your support. It is led by Major-General Bob Dees – a former distinguished Army leader of high integrity, dedication, and vision. We highly recommend Military Ministry and encourage you to join with us in financially supporting this organization.
